Representation is an image and point of view of something.
Hollyoaks Opening Credits
The images of women are being conveyed to the audience that women are sinners. This is because one of the females are taking an apple off the tree and eating it. I think this idea comes from the idea of Adam and Eve and the fact that Eve sinned (eve is female). It could also convey to the audience, especially males that women are deadly as they are using there bodies which could be portrayed as vanity (which is another sin) within this clip
The men and women in “Hollyoaks” are being represented within the opening credits. The females are young and are presented as pretty, flirty and quite sexual beings with a promiscuous side where as some of the men within the opening credits are seen as sort of powerful, strong, serious people who have money. However a lot of the young males represented within this clip look quite care free, happy and fun.
The representations of women and men within the Hollyoaks opening credits conform to the dominant ideologies. The representation of women relates back to the ideology of “male superiority” because the women are seen as less serious and quite inferior compared to the men as they are mainly shown as quite flirtatious people and not as serious as the men. The men conform to the “paternal” dominant ideology because from the way they position there selves and pose in the opening credits we can see that they look quite protective and one male was holding a rose which shows a sense of love and romance towards his spouse.
The Tudors
However compared to the Hollyoaks clip, the clip in "Tudors" does not show any females. This could be conveyed to the audience that women were not as important as men within this programme as they do not even get to be at the beginning of the programme and you have to wait to get into the programme before you can even get to view any women. In other words women are less superior to men. The men we do see in this clip however show a sense of urgency and there faces are very serious and fierce. Towards the end of the clip we see a man stabbing another man which shows a sense of violence and makes the man seem very stereotypical in peoples view of gender. By this i mean women are usually viewed as the more caring and calm sex and men are viewed as the more aggressive sex. The stabbing of the man agree's to this stereotype.
Men are being presented in this clip, especially men from that era. This is because they are wearing very old, traditional attire and there is only men in this clip. They are all walking very orderly together and we do not see any of them really smiling or making any positive gestures towards each other which makes them look very serious and quite powerful in a way because of this seriousness they are giving off.
The representations of men in this clip conform to the dominant representations and ideologies because it supports the idea of "male superiority". It does this because there are only males in the clip as i have said before which shows they are more of the main focus and in a way makes us believe they are more important than women. Also the man who is leading the bunch of males through the hallway looks quite dominant and because of this is suited to the position of power as he is more dominant. It also again supports the ideology of "male superiority" because he is dominant and the idea that this dominance helps them to make better decisions than woman at work and at home.
